20 Apr 2004 T-MOBILE AND TEXACO FUEL
WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS Over 100 T-Mobile HotSpots in Texaco service stations across the UKTexaco and T-Mobile UK today announced that T-Mobile’s HotSpot service is now available at over 100 Texaco service stations, bringing broadband wireless internet access to roadside service stations across the UK for the first time.
As one of the largest fuel retailers in the UK with some 1,400 branded service stations, Texaco is ideally placed to provide convenient T-Mobile HotSpot access nationwide. Initially T-Mobile HotSpots will be available in over 100 service stations, covering the UK’s major road routes.
Customers will be able to access the service by driving onto any Texaco forecourt where the T-Mobile HotSpot service is available, parking in a dedicated bay, and logging in to the service. By using a WLAN enabled laptop, customers can connect to the internet and their corporate network to read and respond to emails, or download documents and presentations, just as they would in the office.
Peter Oakford, Texaco’s General Manager, Marketing Support Europe, said “There are between three and five million business travellers on British roads every day who could potentially benefit from this service. With T-Mobile HotSpots at Texaco, motorists can simply pull into selected Texaco service stations to check their email and use the Internet. It is another way for us to make life simpler for our customers who are already stopping at Texaco for petrol, snacks or other services.”
Brian McBride, T-Mobile UK's Managing Director commented: “Our HotSpot offering is a key building block of T-Mobile’s multimedia experience and reflects T-Mobile’s commitment to delivering simple, seamless communications. Today’s announcement provides customers fast, convenient access to business people on major roads up and down the country. ”
Editor’s notes:
1. Texaco has signed an agreement with Mapesbury Communications Ltd (MCom), a provider of neutral host broadband wireless Internet access hotspots, to be the only service station network in the UK to carry T-Mobile’s Hotspot service.
2. Each service station is surveyed to assess its suitability and ensure any potential safety issues are addressed. Sites offering the Hotspot service all have visible signage and a designated parking space clearly marked to direct them away from the petrol pumps and prevent congestion on the forecourt area.
The T-Mobile HotSpot service (www.t-mobile.com/hotspot)
1. The T-Mobile HotSpot solution is easy to use. Users can check their work e-mail, surf the Internet or download multi-media presentations, all via T-Mobile’s wireless internet connection.
2. Anyone can connect to the service, all they will need is ‘Wi-Fi’ or 802.11b wireless capability for their laptop or PDA. Some devices may already be “Wi-Fi” enabled, but customers can add this capability by purchasing a “Wi-Fi” wireless card.
3. Like any wireless service, the T-Mobile network is not inherently secure. It is your responsibility to adopt appropriate security measures while using the T-Mobile HotSpot network. For more information refer to (www.t-mobile.com/hotspot).
