Former National School Building

Locality Pwllcrochan: Situated on South side of lane from Walton Cross, some 100m ESE of the church.

1861 Former schoolroom in squared grey limestone with slate eaves roof, coped shouldered North gable and bellcote. Single story. North end has 3-light mullion and transom timber window with small-paned glazing, chamfered reveal. Stone sill and moulded stone hoodmould, Bellcote is corbelled with side stepped in and single pointed bell opening. Slate date plaque. Raised plinth. West Side has two 3-light timber mullioned windows. South end has lean-to porch with pointed door. North side has chimney as on the 1851 school at Rhoscrowther, chamfered sides and squared base and cap,

Included as good small-scale example of a rural school building which groups with former parish church in the centre of a scattered community

 

Former Church of Saint Mary

Locality Pwllcrochan: Situated in sloping churchyard South of inlet at Pwllcrochan Flats.

Exterior: circa 14 to circa 15 former parish church with North transept dated 1342. Rubble stone and slate roofs. Nave. Whitewashed rendered chancel. Circa 19 North porch, North transept with squint, Southeast tower with recessed stone spire. And disused South porch. Nave has circa 19 fishscale slate eaves roof. Circa 19 2-light West window with quatrefoil in head. Whitewashed South side with affixed slate plaque to G Phelps (d 1803). Circa 19 North porch has pointed doorway and plain pointed medieval inner doorway. South porch has circa 19 eaves roof and blocked rough stone pointed South doorway. Tower at South East End of nave has corbelled parapet and narrow lancet bell openings. Recessed octagonal spire. Circa 19 2-light South window. North transept has North East angle red carved inscription stone of exceptional rarity, which records its rebuilding by Rudolph Benegar. Rector. 1342. 2-light flat-headed window. West side plaque to Rev A Boye (d 1704). Squint has flat-headed 2-light window. Chancel has 3-light circa 19 east window.
Interior: Not inspected. North transept has circa 19 roof and plastered arch to nave. Fittings have been removed. Font and memorials to Rhoscrowther church

History: Restoration is recorded in 1865. Under Mr Lloyd of Neyland. And 1897. The interior is recorded as having on South side of the nave the effigy of Rudolph de Benegar. The chancel as having sedilia. Piscina. Blocked priest’s door and two niches. The church was closed in 1982
